LONDON, May 30

The new French liner “Normandie made a superb spectacle when the vessel was off Spit head. .She was ablaze with light, her illuminated name, between the funnels, standing out in nine feet letters.

Searchlights picked her tip from the shore while aeroplanes roared overhead. Speedboats encircled her, whilst passengers in pleasure boats cheered the vessel.

The Mayor of Southampton went aboard and welcomed the liner which remained lit anchor for two hours, while her passengers embarked and disembarked.

Then, with three terrific blasts of her. siren, the “Normandie’ turned round. There were crowds at Portsmouth, at Southsea and at Southampton watching until she disappeared in the open channel, with three hundred and fifty workmen aboard } still working to complete the fitting before her arrival at New York.

SOLD FOR SCRAPPING

LONDON, May 30.

The P. and 0. vessel Ballarat has been bought by the Sheffield firm for about £22,250 for scrap. The liner Mantua has been acquired by shipbreakers in China for £30,000.
