GOVERNMENT INTIMATION

AUCKLAND, May 30,

An intimation that the Government • would not consider the reintroduction of the flat rate for telegrams was received to-day by .the Chamber of Commerce from the Postmaster-General, who said during the period April 1, 1834 to January, 1935, the telegraphic traffic, except the press, increased by 0.52 per cent in volume, and 2.1 per cent in revenue. These figures bore out the Department’s contention that the al terecV rates were adjustments rather than increases of charges. After discussion, during which the chief-postmaster (Mr J. P. Houston) enumerated ways in which tne telegraph service had been improved, tlm Chamber decided not to press furthei for,,.a reversion to the old basis, and to its faculties now provided.
