FOBEIGN SHOPKEEPERS

allegation by magjstbA'le

SYDNEY, May 11

The Chief industrial .Magistrate in New South Wales, Mr Prior, said during the hearing of a ease in Sydney ihTs week that- something must be dime to stop foreigners who kept fruit, vegetable and fish shops and conducted restaurants, from breaking industrial awards. JT:s accusation was levelled against foreigners, lie sfiid, oecause their frequent appearances in the industrial Magistrate’s Court, showed that n. any of them were systematic award breakers.

“Prosecutions against have been before mo frequently of late,” said Mr Prior. “It is notorious that they are underpaying their employees. This puts foreigners in such a favourable position compared with Australian business people that many Australians have to go out of business because they cannot compete. Employees of o.ir own nationality are also adversely affected, as most of these award-breakers employ persons of their own nationality. A foreigner comes to this country and accepts the privileges of citizenship. He lias also to accept the responsibility of that citizenship.”
