APPALLING CONDITIONS

“I am convinced that a large slice of North China an approximate area pf eight thousand square miles, is being honey-combed by Japanese and Korean dope pedlars, and there appears to be a grave danger that the social, economic fabric of the whole region, with a population of six million, is being steadily undermined. This conclusion was expressed to the “Sun Herald,” by Miss Muriel Lester, a well-known British social worker, on her- return to Pekin from a tour of investigation of the so-called demilitarised jsone—a strip of territory just southward of the Great Wall, extending from the sea coast, twenty miles northward' of Tientsin, and westward to the borders of inner Mongol-
Miss Lester described as appalling, the conditions of the country, where 163 Japanese and Korean establishments were openly and illegally trafficking in opium, morphine, and herein.
