BOROUGH COUNCIL

MEETING HELD LAST EVENING The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening when there were present the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) and Crs. A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff. J. King, J. Cuttance, A. C. Armstrong, A. Thompson, G. Heinz. An apology was received from Cr E. Teichelniann. The financial statement showed that expenditure amounted to £289 Gs 2d, and the receipts to £2G3 2s. There was a debit of £221 9s 4 t i in the district fund account. Accounts amounting to £654 11s 9d were passed for pa-ym- it.

'l'he following stock was slaughtered at 'the municipal abattoirs during March:- —Heifers 3/, lambs I<G pigs 10, bullocks 47, cows 35, calves 17, sheep 2GO. Condemned, 1 cow. Fees £BO 6s as against £77 9s last year. A deputation trom the R.S--A. waited on tlie Council, Messrs W. E. Brown, C. Hart and W. F. Ashley being in attendance.

The Returned Soldiers’ Association made application for permission to hold a sacred concert in the Princess Theatre on Anzac night, with the right to charge for admission. Granted. Permissi-'ii was granted the I ulma Moil’s and Hokitika and Rover Ladies’ Hockey Clubs to play on Class Square. M. A. Ridland, Weld Street wrote

dra w ing attention to the unsatisfactory condition of untenantcd building at the corner of Weld and Healey Streets owned by Mr H. Jones, and asking the Council to take steps to have the building either demolished or repaired so as to make it habitable. It was decided Mr Jones be asked to demolish the building. The Lake Kl-mieri Scenic Board wrote regarding erection of notice boards prohibiting bathing within a certain distance ol the intake of the borough water supply.—Crs. King and Duff were appointed to confer with the Board. The Commisisoner of Crown Lands advised Mr C. Ross had applied for a license, under the Scenery Preservation Act, .over the site of the present boat shed at the jetty near the Lake outlet and asking whether the Conned had any -objection to the grant. —Referred to Crs King and Duff. The Town Clerk, Wairoa, wrote askin for various particulars in connection with the Hokitika abattoirs. —Particulars to be supplied. Messrs Park and Murdoch wrote regarding the Council’s water race lieeu.se through special dredging claim area.—Received. The Westland Rughv Football SubITnion forwarded a petition undei Sec. 20 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22. 22. to determine the statutory half--1,, liday in the borough by a poll, the petition being signed by 14 per cent of electors—lt was reported notice of the poll had been given. Two tenders for pipe moulds wore received, that of A. Cederman, the lower, being accepted. A sub-committee was appointed to go into the question of the parking of ears within the borough. The foreman submitted his report as follows: —

At the beginning of the month the pipe line still required attention, and repairs were carried out between the Racecourse Hilt and the reservoir. Trestles were put under the pipes across the Kanieri river at the Forks and tlie wire cable taken off to allow the bridge to be repaired. The pipes were replaced at the penstock which wore carried away bv the recent had weather, about two hundred feet being replaced. Whiter services were put in at Mr Heyward’s in Hoffman Street and Mr Haddock’s in Stafford Street, and water service renewed at Mr Butlandhs, Gibson’s Quay. Burst pipes were repaired at the intersection of Hampden and Sewell Streets, and in Weld Street, Sale Street, and the earner of Stafford and Tailored Streets. These were repaired with bands and a new collar put on at the intercsection of Rolleston Street and Gibson’s Quay. New washers were put on the fire plug at the top of Racecourse HiU, and the concrete cover lifted over the. tire plug at the intersection of Sale and Hampden Streets. A new earthenware pipe was put in the drain leading from tlie Railway Hotel, and two wooden pipes put across Hampden Street pootpntli at Mr- J. Preston’s. Pot holes were re-

paired in Weld Street with asphalt and some repairs carried ies t.m hill, which was scoured -out by recent rain. About four and a half chains of korbing was laid down in North Revel I Street and a crossing put ill and the street graded. Levels were taken for the extension of the Sewell Street drain up to Tudor Street lor the drainage of the premises in that quarter. During the month. Mr t’ropp was off work lor nine days with an injured hand, caused by being crushed with a pipe while working at the Forks.
