Becnuse of the fact that the eonsumption of beer has steadily declined since the War, the brewers had embarked on an advertisement campaign to tempt the new generation. Their advertisements should be .restricted, as bad already been done with moneylenders’ advertisements.

Lord Asquith moved the rejection of the measure. He said: “This is an absurd and unenforceable Bill, under which Omav Khayaam would he prohibited, the Bible expurgated, and Horace quoted with the greatest care.” The Bishop of London said that as a non-fanatical teetotaller, lie supported the Bill.

Lord Faversham said that the Government regarded the Bill as jbeing neither practicable nor justifiable. The Bill was negatived without a division.
