MEAT INDUSTRY

PRESS COMMENT

BRITAIN AND THE DOMINIONS.

(United Press Association— By Electric*

TeJegraph-rCopy right.)

(Received . this day at 10 a.m.)

LONDON, February 18

The “Times’* says the conditions of. the meat market are such that homegrown beef Is hound to sink unless they can be improved. -Beef in England and Wales accounts'Tor thirty-five per cent of the total agricultural production and in Scotland fifty-four per cent. Mr Stanley Bruce, at the world conference, said it was - a confession of bankruptcy in statesmanship to restrict consumption when so many have their needs unsatisfied, but it is hopeless, both for Britain and her Dominions, if agricultural prices ar e allowed to collapse below the cost of production. During th e discussion with the Dominions’ Prime Ministers in the spring, a coherent converging of policies must be framed reconciling the restoration of British agriculture und the home market for the British good, with the development of the Dominions and the interests of British exports.'
