ICELAND’S FUTURE

THE DESIRE OF THE PEOPLE

FOR PLACE IN BRITISH EMPIRE

LONDON, February 1

The possibility of Iceland entering the British Empire after 1940, when the treaty of unity with Denmark will end, is being widely discussed. Influential Icelanders are publicly supporting the proposal, Socialist newspapers alone are opposing it.

Th e Scotsman points out that tho Icelanders are less likely to lose their language or to forget their traditions than any small nation in the woiTd, as they realise they have contributed their share of imperishable tilings to the world’s storehouse. The paper adds: “The Banish delegates who drafted the Treaty of Unity in 1918, made separation most difficult, as denunciation of the treaty necessitates a two-thirds majority in Parliament, and also a three-quarters majority in the referendum. “But the Icelanders regard such obstacles to the people’s desire as a spur. Nevertheless, if they wish to enter the Empire they must take the initiative.”
