THE BEACH.
(To the Editor) Sir,- —What a place Hokitika- is with “stinks” on t|.:o beach, “stinks” in the street, and death on every hand;, my wonder is that Air Dromcraaie stays here! Now the beach proper does not stink, bnt ii, as Mr lA,'jmgool,c has evidently done, one goes along the grass and shrubs, prac-itioa-Uy the backyards of tile shopkeepers, one will certainly smell t|he decaying bushes, but L contend this is not the beach. As lor bottles in the vicinity of the Seaside tennis court, he will find on inquiry, these were collected by enterprising Boy Scouts as a future means of raising money. Admittedly the Borough Council has been lax in the past particularly in regard to the water suppiy, but a s anyone who reads the Council reports knows, it has not a great deal of money. This year it has to find approximately £4OO for tar sealing purposes, money for the renewal of the water supply besides money for ordinary maintenances one of which is the weekly collection of rubbish from the business premises. Begardinrr Mr Dromgoole’s outburst on flies, what place is not troubled with these pests in summer. If he reads several New Zealand newspapers he will find other towns have this same trouble.
T appreciate f ‘AVell Wisher's” letter who employs neither domineering nor blatant verbosity to air his views and does not descend to objectionable language in giving his honest opinion. Coming to “"Ratepayer” and “Another Resident” who want bathing sheds etc., where is the unfathomable well of finance to be found to pay for these amenities? Could we ask “Ratepayer” and “Another Resident” to donate or work for these causes. Tf the beach and town -are the terrible places your correspondents state, why have they not noticed this state ■of affairs before-, -arid suggested .or offered means for clearing up such horrible messes. T go to the extreme of asking “New” or should it be “Hot Blood” to stand for the Council and no doubt when elected (which is a foregone conclusion; he will be able to conjure up enough money to fix such things as the beach, unsightly (tin) fences, drains, and other obtruding objects. I did not intend to write and do not intend to write further on this subject hut I am afraid the rapid outpourings against this cur town drew me on. I am etc., LOYAL.
