It was stated at the meeting of the Hospital Board last evening that to meet the requirements of country visitors the hospital would be open for visitors daily, except that on Thursdays visits could only be made for half an hour, between 3 p.m. and 3.30 p.m.

A rather serious motor accident occurred in the Duller Gorge, nearlhc Runt, on Sunday, but luckily no loss of life resulted. At the meeting of the Westland Hospital Board last evening, the Chairman in moving the reception of the Treasurer’s report, stated there had been a drop in the amount ot patients ices received for the period. He pointed out that there had been a number of accident eases in the institution in which the patients were single men, receiving as compensation portion of the amount of wages they had been earning, hut in a number of instances they had left the hospital without paying anything for their upkeep. This lie considered grossly unfair and lie thought some steps should be taken to prevent a recurrence in the future.
Regulations are contained in the latest issue of the “New Zealand Gazette” amending others relating to motor-car plivtes. It is provided by Order-in-Council, that- ' registration plates affixed to private motor-ears being the property of or regularly used by the Governor-General, may be distinguished by the symbol of a crown alone. Another regulation provides for private-hire or rental, cars a series of numerals from 1 to 300 inclusive, without initial letter, and also a series of numerals from 5)6900 to 99699 inclusive, preeeeded by the letter N.
Uninvited guests at Saturday night’s river carnival at Christchurch were a wild duck and four of her progeny. Just as the Duke of Gloucester’s barge bee-an its voyage up to the Carlton Mill bridge. Mrs Duck and her family swam nest the dais. The glare of the electric lights on the Royal barge confused the ducklings, sending them scattering in different directions. Shortly afterwards an obviously worried mother duck swam wildly about in search for her missing family. Having at last found them, and having, presumably, counted heads, she continued her placid way’down stream, the ducklings strung out behind her in a little formal line.
At the Magistrate's Court Greymouth yesterday, when charged with fighting in Tainui Street on December 1, Martin Laurence Crowe pleaded not guilty. Loyola Pritchard Hales, similarly charged, pleaded “guilty, under strong provocation.” The S-M. said it seemed quite clear, on the evidence, that there was no case against Crowe, his action being in self-defence. Hales, on his own- evidence convicted himself as the.aggressor. He must be convicted, and would be fined £2, with 10s costs. The charge against Crowe would be dismissed.
The wedding was celebrated on Saturday of Air Jack Roche, the wellknown trotting owner, son of -Mr F. Roche, and the late -Airs Roche, Westport, to Joan, daughter of Air and Mrs Morganty, also of AYestport. The ceremony took place at St. C'aniee’s TTiurch. Rev. Father Phelan officiating. ’File bride was attended bv her sister Pat, as bridesmaid, and Air A. O’Neill was best man. After the ceremmiy a large number of guests were present at a reception held at the residence of the bride’s parents. The wedding unites two families who have been associated with trotting in AVestport for many years.
While a large crowd of people were awaiting the arrival of the Duke of Gloucester last week at the Oatnaru Public Gardens, where the official welcome was tendered, an amusing incident happened in whch a local body official was caused considerable embarrassment. The public and school children were watching the road along which the Royal Party were to travel. At the time appointed a car appeared moving slow, lv, and thinking the sole occupant of the hack seat to be the Duke the crowd began cheering and the children added their voices to the welcome, at the same time waving hundreds of flags: The gathering was highly amused when the official stepped from the ear and walked to his place on the dais, a very embarrassed man.
