GRASSLAND FIRES

IN THE WAIRARAPA

(Per Preea Association—Qjpyrijsbt)

MASTERTON, January 14

Fairlv extensive areas of grasslands in various parts of the Wnirarapa district have been swept by fire during the past few weeks, and large hands of volunteers have been engaged in the strenuous task of checking the spread.

An area of ‘about 400 acres, some seven miles from Carterton, was swept to-day, and, in spite of the efforts of about 50 men, the flame s seriously threatened Carter’s Bush, a beautiful area, of native bush. The fire actually reached the scrub at the outskirts of the bush before being checked.

Late tlii s evening, the danger of the hush catching fire was still imminent/ and a large party of men are camping out to-night in ease of emergency.
