NEW COMET

MELBOURNE DISCOVERY.

WELLINGTON, Jan. 10

A cablegram announcing the discovery of a new comet was received to-day by the Dominion Observatory from the Melborne Observalmt should ho visible in moderate instruments, those, for instance, with apertures of from three to eight inches. Generally several comets of this kind are discovered each year, but last year was unusual in that no comets were found in the twelve months and this is the first this year.

The comet was discovered on January 8 at 18 hours ‘2B minutes Greenwich mean time. Its right ascension was then I) hours 59 minutes 48 seconds, and its declination was 51 degree's 3 minutes south. Its daily motions are in tlio right ascension 16 seconds of time increasing and in declination moving 1 degree 43 minutes north. Its magnitude is 10, and it lias a diffused appearance. Nothing is reported about its tail. The details given place the comet as not far away, 10 degrees approxb matcly from the bright st.a* Aclieinar and almost} exactly one .degree north of the third magnitude star Mela Phoeniois. That is its approximate position to-night, and it is moving almost exactly due north.
