MELBOURNE, January 2. Raiding a ceil at Penti idge * gaol warders, found a cunningly concealed and ingeniously prepared gaol-breaker's kit, on which a prisoner serving an eight years 1 term Tor shopbreaking had his hopes for a Christmas escape.
For some days the man had been under observation, and a search of his cell reveiled the following articles:—A miniature blow-lamp, the size of a matchbox, and a length of rubber tube, a hacksaw frame made from an oddment of steel, small pieces of hacksaw ’bl'<de, a •home-made gl assent tor .and 12ft of stout cord with grappling irons attached.
Apparently ho intended to use the giasseutter, blowlamp and saw to escape from the cell through the ironbarred window, the man, would then have used the rope and grappling books to scale the inner and outer walls of the risen.
The articles had been smuggled into tlio coil from the prison workshop. To get the cord into his cell, the man had opened a tin of jam, which was part of his issue, removed some of tile jam. inserted the rope and soldered the lid on again
