VETERAN CARS

ANNUAL RUN IN ENGLAND

LONDON January 3. Eighty-five cars paraded in the city of London, the other day for the annual R.A.C. veteran car run to Brighton. All these vehicles were really ancient, 1 for the rules provided that only cars manufactured in 1904 or prior to that year are eligible. Not only was the entry a record, but, by far and away the biggest cr o wd turned out to sec the veterans chugging tlieir way to the S o,, th C°ast resort. There is no competitive element in the event, for drivers by checking in by 4 p.m. secured an equal award—this year a medal instead of a certificate —to those who had made the jour, liey in a certain time. Actually the fastest time was made iby A. J. Wrohan with his 1904 60 horse-power five-seater Mercedes, which reached the Madeira Drive, 60 miles away, in 2h 4m 40s. Twelve of the veterans completed the distance in under three hours. The run was free from .accident, but numerous drivers had to use considerable ingenuity to patch up their machines en route.

The oldest car was an 1896 Leon Bollee, which did the distance in 3h 33m. Other early cars were an 1897 Hurtu (4h 24m). 1898 Benz (4h 21m), 1898 Daimler (41i 48m), and 1898 Do Dion Bouton trieycle (31i 29m). There were four machines dated 1899, and nine dated 1900.
