LYALL BAY 'PROSECUTION
(Per Press Association, Copyright) ,WELLINGTON, Jan. 11. According to what transpired jn 11 court hearing to-dav, (the proprietor of Rodney’s Club, at Lyall Hay j finding that the business was not profitable. and that he would have to give it up, tried to “mak« a welter” ol the Christmas period by selling liquor. This effort did not pay' and it further resulted in a police raid, whence arose a prosecution, ’flic defendant was Rodney Pankburst and be was fined £7 10s on each of three charges of selling liquor without a license.
Joseph Barnes the steward of the club, was convicted and ordered to paycosts on two charges of aiding Pamthurst.
The confiscated liquor, it was stated, meant another £ls to Pankhurst. As an instance of the unprofitable nature of the business, counsel mentioned that there wer e only eighteen on tihe promise's op Christmas Eve, and the takings were only £4 Bs. Pankhurst had been previously convicted in conndction with a cabaret at Seatoun.
