PEAT FIRES

RAGING IN HAMILTON SWAMPS.

HAMILTON, January 11. Thick fog accentuated by smoke from peat fires that have been raging in the swamps adjacent to- the town made for unpleasant conditions this morning in Hamilton, and visibility in the main street was limited to fifty yards.

The fires had been smouldering fully a month ; and as a result of the long spell of dry weathtr, have burst in to flame igniting belts belts ol scrub and ti tree. Property damaged is very slight.
