NEW, SCHEDULE
FOR COMMONWEALTH TARIFFS (Australian Press Association.) CANBERRA, December 7. Thu Federal Government Iia s adopted a new tariff sqhedule, giving effect to the reports of the Tariff Board. It is one providing for 205 reductions in the Customs duties,, of which 104 iare reductions under the British preferential tariff. Many of the reductions cover cotton piece go:(ds, ,which we.ra jlhe subject of criticism overseas. "ljlie JMinj.stteft* of> Customs, Mr White, said that many industries had arrived at such a. state of efficiency that they could carry on under the protection afforded by the exchange, and without any tariff protection. He added that during the period of the tariff revision by the Lyons Government, some sixty-eight thousand purses lvad returned to employment. He also claimed the Customs reductions would competition. Mr J. M. Scullin, the Leader of the Opposition, deel-rcd that drastic inroads o u .Australia’s protective policy would f>e made by this new schedule. He pointed out the effect of the prevHi s reductions mode i n the tariff, which already was to be seen in their trade balance, which is now on the wrong side by over erne million sterling, as composed to fhe favourable balance of £9,921,000 for the corresponding period of last year. LANCASHIRE VIEWS LONDON, December 7. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Manchester correspondent, commenting on the Australian tariff changes, says: “The reductions o n cotton goods are regarded as inadequate, or merely as a reclassification. They will not meet Lancashire's. They are of no practical v-uio.” The “Financial News’ ” Mnnc/msfer correspondent savs: “The. duties leave the position' entirely unchanged.”
