MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Hokitika District High School committee was held last evening, when there were present: ’ llfessls' A. C. Armstrong \chairman), J. Conning, H. W. R. Sweney, J. J. Breeze, W. H. Shannon, R. J. Ped-der and the Rev. Naylor. , v . ' A letter was received from the Education Board regretting it could not grant any financial, -assistance until after the end of February. A letter was received from the secretary of tike, Young- . N.Z. League, forwarding particulars- of the excursions toqAuckland and Wellington, of schoolboys between the ages-of 11 and id years, on : the occasion of the Royal visit celebrations. The matter was referred to the-Rector to acquaint the scholars of'tike proposal. Letters were, received from the Koiterangi and Kumara. School Committees, supporting any action that may be take, to induce the Government to restore the control of: the High School Boards funds to local authority, with particular reference to the irostoAition of the hoc I ding- allowance to country scholars attending the high school. • •
It was decided to get- information from the Akaroa High School Committee as to the outcome- of their representations on ia similar.matter. It was decided to hold -the annual picnic at Runanga- on- Wednesday February 6. • .:n It was resolved to forward a letter of congratulations to Mr.S. ,J. Irwin on his promotion, and regretting the loss of his services to the schools, in this district. -4/ The chairman 'and secretary were instructed to forward a letter to Mr Chas. Kirk, who has retired on superannuation from the position of. secretary to tike Canterbury Education Board, and to forward lfinl a token of the esteem in which ll lie was held, and the appreciation ofi the assistance he iha s rendered the school throughout his career. A letter of congratulation on his appointment as successor to Mr Kirk was also- to be forwarded to Mr Rowley. -f : After some disCussioff oa, , sub-com-mittee was appointed'to get a price for the ploughing-! levelling and sowing of the football -playing area, in the school, and /if expedient, to get tihe work done durint/the holidays. . ; The Rector reported a further instalment of 105 hooks for the primary school library had come to hard, and would be available to the children at the end of the present Week. There wa-g an increase in the attendance of the primary school for the mouth and a slight decrease in the secondary department. The proficiency examinations were held but' the results would not be disclosed until the last week of 'the present term. The rector extended greetings from himself and the- staff and .thanked the committee for ’ their co-operation during the year,-; -
