LEG THEORY

M.'C.O. DECISION NEXT MONTH

LONDON, November 11

Writing i n the News, Chronicle,' Mr A. E. R. Gilligan expresses the opinion , that the special committee of the M.C.C. will report upon “leg theory” bowling to the advisory committee at the end of next month, and. that the advisory committee will then vote upon it. The general opinion, he states, is opposed to legislation. It is reiterated that the solution of the problem lies with the county captains.

“I douibt wthether legislation will prevent bowling at the man or dictate the placing of the field to prevent a ring of men on the leg side,” says Mr Gilligan. ‘but it might be suggested that such tactics ar e contrary to the spirit of the game. “The committee,” adds the writer, “■discussed Mai leys scheme, of diagonal linos, and also the suggestion of placing a lino half-way between the wickets. A ball pitching on the bowler’s side would then be a no-bali.”

As South Africa is testing the offside “leg-before” rule to which Australia is favourable. Mr Gilligan says, h c f lopes the English counties will' also try it.
