NAZI ATTITUDE

TO NEIGHBOURS

INTERVIEW WITH CHANCELLOR

(United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)

BERLIN, August 6

If it rests with Germany, then war will not come again'! We i,kall never figlit again, except it is in seif defence. We will never come into conflict with England on the Rhine, or elsewhere, unless England attacks us. This declaration was made by Leader-Ohan-cellor Hitler, in the coui se of a statement to Mr Ward Price, who is the '‘Daily Mail’s” special correspondent at Berlin.

Mr Ward Price says': “I have had an hour’s conversation with. Heir Adolf Hitler. ,It was not an interview. In this, the world’s most powerful statesman answered all my , questions without any previous knowledge of them.”

Germany, said Herr Hitler, had .a more profound impression than had any other country of the evils of war. He remarked: “Germany’s problems cannot be settled by war, but they are limited to what the other nations on their part regard 'as 'their most elementary rights. Wo only ask for the maintenance of toe present frontiers.”' ' Alluding to Mi* Stanley Baldwin’s latest statement aboutVß-itain’s frontier being now on the Rhine, Herr Hitler said it may be that some of the French statesmen declare that France must be defended on the Oder, and that Russia must be defended on the Danube. Therefore, Germany can hardly be reproached if she is seeking for national protection within her own frontier. We want nothing from England. I would not sacrifice a single German to get back any colony in the world. We know that the former German colonies in Africa are costly luxuries, even for England. Britain’s, increased air fleet does not cause Ger-. many the' slip/:test resentment. The expansion of her fleet does, not concern us, because we do not intend to attack you. Our present, steps, inclufl-. ing our air. fleet,,, are .because powerful foes surround us,, and they .may, sojne day make .demands, that pyil|. not. ; lie acceptable. : ’ 7 ; *...... --, : "

■ Herr Hitler s^id: “We shflll not afr itaek: Austria,, but we,-cannot , .prevent the,; Austrians from seeking to restore their ancient connection with Germany. I am certain that if a secret ballot- election were to be held in Austria. the-,whole matter would be cleared p*>.” . -1 ; - . ALLIANCE WITH REICHSWEHR p-,PARIS, August A. 1 Tho Paris paper, “Soir’s” Prague correspondent, discloses . t/iat i - LeaderChancellor Hitler, though at first he had riot intended to do so, concluded a treaty of alliance with the German Reichswehr. '■ . 1 ■ General Goering mentioned police reports that Feild 'Marshal von Hindenburg had left a -political .testament, recommending the choice of a Hohenzollern for Rreidserit, a copy of which had secretly been sent to Doo n where the Kaiser lives. General Goering said that von Hindenburg’s old friend, General von Oldenburgh, mi<rht have the on.gin.al text. Hitler declared that he knew how to muzzle von Oldenburg. He stated that he would, if necessary banish the Hohenzollerns from Germany, and would confiscate their property.

NEW RESPECT FOR HITLER LONDON, August 6. The “Daily Telegraph’s Berlin correspondent says there is intense interest in the speech which Herr Hitler is to deliver in the Reichstag on Mon. day, and there are hopes that he will define Germany’s attitude towards an eastern European peace pact, and to Austria, as Germany’s foreign policy The Nationalist and Conservative elements have recently developed a certain respect for Herr Hitler personally, though they detest his party. Now that he is the head of the State, with the Reichswehr behind him, he is assured of their loyalty. Thus, though National Socialism is weaker, Herr Hitler momentarily is stronger. A testing time is likely to come in the winter, with threatened hardships, such a 5 food cards, recalling . horrors which Germany had to endure during the war.
