TRAIN UNCOUPLED “FOR FUN”

BRISBANE, August, 2.

In the Police Court at Darwin David Nightingale pleaded guilty to a charge of having uncoupled a train in the course of a run from Pine Creek to Darwin. He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Arthur Scott, guard, who was in charge of the train which had a load of 110 tons, and 20 passengers, said that passing Boomlorra- he saw that the train had parted and put on the brakes and brought the rear portion to a standstill.

The police stated that accused had told them that he uncoupled the train for fun.

William Murray, engine driver, sated that if the breakaway had not been noticed quickly the rear portion might have crashed into the front portion and the whole train might have been derailed or toppled over.
