BOILER IN HOUSE EXPLODES. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) CHRISTCHURCH, Ju'iy 9. The explosion of ia hot water boiler wrecked the drawing room and kitchen of Mr R. L. Jameson’s ’muse at Culverden. The -dividing wall between two rooms was shattered. It i s believed that the cause of the explosion was ice in the vent pipe, which had not thawed since the recent eokl weather.
' SCHOONER. IN DISTRESS AUCKLAND, July 9. The schooner, Wakanui, was sighted last Friday evening flying distress signals a few miles west of Cape Runaway, her engines having broken dowit. A fishing boat took the "Wakanui in tow, and brought her fifty miles to Whakatane Head. SHIP’S SURGEON ILL. AUCKLAND, July 9. Shortly after the liner Niagara left Vancouver, the ships surgeon. ])r A. N. Beattie, was taken seriously ill. with bronchitis. At Honolulu he was taken ashore, and put in hospital, his place on board being taken by Dr Thomas McVoagh. practising surgeon, of Honolulu. It is expected that Dr Beattie will be well enough to rejoin the Niagara- when she next ■calls at Honolulu on August 3.
