DISASTROUS FIRE

IN NORTH ISLAND THREE BUILDINGS DESTROYED. (Per Press Association.— Copyright.) PALMERSTON NORTH, July 10. A fire shortly after midnight caused much damage in the Aslihurst township, the Masonic Hotel, Public Hall, and Masonic Hall being destroyed. It is believed tho blaze originated in the hotel’s chimney. The only occupant of the hotel at the time was a porter, the others being absent at a dance some miles away. The porter, aroused by tile smoke in his room, made his escape with difficulty. The building, an old wooden one, was soon a raging inferno. The flames spread .to the Public Hall five yards away, which was soon consumed. Then the Masonic Hull, a comparatively recent structure, caught alight, hut not before some furniture and fittings had' been removed. The Masonic Hall was also destroyed. Details of the insurances are not available. There is no fire brigade at Aslihurst, but a bucket brigade saved other premises,
