A REVIEW

BY A. AND P. PRESIDENT (Per Press Association —Copyright). WELLINGTON, June 19. In his address as retiring President of the Royal Agricultural Show to> day, Mr MacFadano saicl that, for many, this last year bad been the best since 1912. An improvement had been seen in the quantity land quality of production, and also in high working profits, which had enabled most of the. losses of the past foUr years to be paid off. One of the reasons for the improvement was that tire Government had refused to be stampeded into doing rasli things, but had stdads ily considered tire general interests of one industry upon which the Dominion relied. Other factors were the depreciation of New Zealand’s currency in line with action taken by the rest of the world; increased prices obtainable overseas owing to a natural reaction to low prices oi the previous year; lower costs of production, and more economical methods; the management of land to greater extent than ever before by men with practical experience, and an absence o speculation in farm property. He predicted that when confidence in land returned fully, the business world would be falling over itself to get money into primary production at any sort of lo>v interest. It was the diity of every farmer to maintain and mcreare that confidence. There was another and greater reason prosperity. It was the spirit of fanners themselves, their determination to make their farms pay, and to increase production, in spite of the discouraging ""warn tributes to teen interest taken by the Governo.-GeyeMl « fanning matters were paid bj spe o’, at the meeting, and it was resolvod unanimously to express the Society’s appreciation in a letter o direction of having His Excellency s term of office extended.
