(Per Press Association,—Copyright.)
WELLINGTON, June 16.
Jn a report covering the activities of the New Zealand Railway Workshops, Mr Maokley, general manager of Railways, says that the upward trend of traffic, both passenger and freight, has. been to render necessary replacements of a larger proportion than usual of the equipment that has reached the end of its useful life. Thus has given an impetus to the shops’ activities, with the result that a number of men have been brought back into the Department’s employment. The projected visit of a member of the Royal Family this year will come at- a time when in ordinary circumstances Alio Department is celled upon to carrv’ its maximum traffic, said - * Mack-ley. Hence, in anticipation of exceptiopally heavy demands npon the enwine power a'hd rolling stock in December and January, the whole programme of building a'Kl iepai in locomotives, car* and waggons has been arranged to ensure that the latest possible number of vehicles will be , 3 rail able for the summer traffic.
