HITLER WELCOMED

In a giant all-metal plane, wherein lie was accompanied by von Neurath and a retinue of eight, Chancellor Hitler flew direct to the Lido airport from Munich, thus conveniently avoiding traversing Austrian territory by train. Two other planes prceautionally preceded the Chancellor’s, another following directly. Hitler landed while the hand played “Deutschland Über Alles.” Jack-booted, Mussolini, surrounded by Black Shirts, cordially welcomed the Chancellor in German, whereto Hitler replied in subdued tones. Both embarked in , a motor launch bound for Venice, where there were no naval salutes, but airplanes provided an imposing escort. Crowds, shouting “Viva”, greeted Hitler at the Grand Hotel, wherefrom he goes to the Villa Pisanai, as the guest of II Duce at lunch.
