NOTED CYCLIST
DEATH AT MELBOURNE. (Per Pre r 3 Association.— Copyright.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. Private advice has ’ been received of the: death at Melbourne of Herbert John, Pither, aged 66. He was a prominent cyclist in the early days, ■being >V.istralian and Nbw Zealand champion in 1884 and 1895, defeating A. A. Zinnerman. in a match race at Sydney.- He also built and flew at Riverton one of the first aeroplanes to be flown in the Dominion. Later he made pioneer flights with it in Australia. He was noted as a wonderful mechanic and built motor cai and marine engines.
