PERFORMANCE BY R, WHITCOMBE LONDON, April 30. In the Dunlop professional golf tournament, which offers £1,600 in prize money, the qualifying rounds were played at the Hesketh and Southport courses. R. Whitcombe leads the field with 64, a record for Hesketh. King and E. Whitcombe 67, equalled the course record. Havers’s score was 69. Other scores include: Ray 71, Padgham 72, Duncan 73. At Southport, Allis and Compston, with 71, are the leaders. Others include Mitchell 72, Perry 73. R. Whit.combe’s 64 is described as one of the most remarkable in" the history of British golf. It is nine below the scratch score and three below the record. The score is the lowest ever returned in a first class tournament in Great Britain. Hesketh is a 6046 yard course. Whitcombe’s figures were:— , 0ut—344342444. 1n—444433334. The “Daily Mail” says: “Bobby Jones never produced more accurate golf. Whitcombe took only one putt on five greens.” Two South Africans are the only Dominion players of the-225 entrants. In the British amateur championship, there is a strong American challenge, as all the Walker Cup plavers, who are already practising at St. Andrews, have entered. The draw has been unkind to the Americans, seven of whom are in the top half. Ouimet and Gus Noreland meet in the first round.
