meeting held last evening. The Hokitika 'Borough Coilncf| met last evening when -there wcre present the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), and (Jrs. D. P. Stuart, 'M. McGavjn, J. King, and T. W. Duff. Apologies were received .from Crs. A. Thompson, G. Heinz, E. Teicholnrann, A. Pi. Elcock, and I. 0. Armstrong. The Department of Internal Affairs acknowledged the Council’s intimation that Mr W. C- Bnaddon Lad withdrawn his resignation and will continue ■to act as one of the Council’s members on the Hokitika Fire Board.—(Received. The Commissioner of Unemployment intimated that before subsidy can 'he granted for the erections of structures on main highways, the balance of the proposed work shall have been approved by the Public Works Engineer,—Received . The Minister of Internal Affairs intimated that among the remits to be considered by the Municipal Conference, was one proposing the formation of a National Fire Council to control the fire service, .'and that this would in- j volvc the abolition of fire hoards outside the main centres, and asking lor j the views of the Council with respect; to the proposal.—Received, the remit J having been negatived by the conference.'v The Municipal Association .forwarded a report of a sub-committee set tip by the association in regard to local'body taxation.—Received. !>* The Commissioner of Tr:ansportv|;forwarded proposed amendments to 'transport regulations, and .asking for an expression of opinion from the Council. —Referred to traffic inspector and town clerk. The Sanitary Inspector, Gieyniouth, requested that notice bo served on an owner of property to carry out certain improvements.—Received.

The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, wrote re sale of fish at Hokitika at the river wharf, and asking the Council to sec the regulations arc enforced.—Received.

The Hokitika Public Library Committee made application for increase of subsidy from £l2O to £l3O per annum,-granted. The ; Hokitika Am’teor Swimming Club asked for la. grant in .aid of funds, as, owing to weather conditions, it had not been possible to supplement their revenue :by holding carnivals--orented ’ the sum ’ of; £2 ;2si The Undersecretary, Public Works Department, forwarded an extract f om N-Z. Referred to Works Committee for attention. The financial statement showed that receipts since the last meeting amounted to £1405/11/1, and expenditure to £172/9/7. There iva s a credit balance of £69/11/8 in the district fund accounts. ’ Accounts totalling £579/o/6 were passed for payment. Stock, was slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs as follows Cows 18, bullocks 52, heifers 22, sheep 204, pigs 5, lambs 157, and calves 13. Condemned *me sheep. Fees for the month amounted t° £64/9/0 compared with £64/2/0 for the corresponding period last year.

The foreman reported on work duiing the past month as follows :

The star')' was engaged in removing the old timber from the Livingstone drain at the top of racecourse hill, and loplacing with 2d concrete pipes, this work occupied two weeks. Fitzherbert Street drain between Wold Street and Gibson’s Quay was uncovered and the drain leading from Mrs Duncan's across tin* footpath repaired. The footpath on the north side of. Weld Street between Boa ley and Fitzherbert; Street was tar sealed. The water required a good deal of attention this month. A new pipe wa s put in Stafford Street between Bcaley and Fitzherbert Streets. Two new pipes were put in Gibson’s Quay, Bcalv and Fitzherlierts Streets. One new pipe was put in Gibson’s Quay between Hall and Brittan Streets, and cih> put in Hall Street between Hampden and Stafford Streets. Five new pipes were put in Weld Street at the Clock Tower and three old one’s removed. The valve at the corner of Healey Street and Gibson’s quay was repaired, also the valve at the swimming baths. A water service was put in at A. Stephenson’s in Hampden Street and two services repaired, at Airs Hanssmann’s, Gibson Quay, and at Airs Shadbolt’s, Fitzherbert Street. Several days were spent repairing water mains about town ana between the reservoir and the lake. The average depth of water in the reservoir 'or the* month was Ift 7,in.

No. 5 Scheme. Drains:—Brittan Street west side, and Park Street back of school. Foot paths:—Stafford Street along Cass Square, ready for tar sealing, Revolt Street North, Fitzherbert Street west side. Aten were employed at the school ground. Scything was continued .in Healey, Hampden and Brittan Streets. Gravel Pit:—The supply of screened gravel for roads was continued and several street corners built up. Abattoirs: —\ arioiis repairs have been carried out. C'emtery : —Clearing ground and lootpnths clone under supervision of the Sexton, Cas s Square and Maenndivw Square:—Footpaths, lawns and flower plots were cleaned under caretaker’s supervision. Men were also }l fc the aerodrome levelling and carting spoil. The Council discussed the question of

drainage in regard to Revell Street, the foreman being asked to report at next meeting. Tim Council, also considered the question of the use of certain pipes for future /replacement, prices and other details being submitted.
