WELLINGTON, November 10.
The Government’s intentions as to future of radio broadcasting, especially as ; far a s B stations is concerned were outlined in a statement to • the House of Representatives by the PostmasterGeneral this morning. He said the Government had now decided that the use of “sponsored programmes” would not be permitted after 31st March, 1934, when the present licenses expiredThe Minister: stated the prices paid for the three stations it had acquired had been:—lZß Auckland, £2200; 2ZW Wellington, £2300; SZC Christchurch £6OO. .»
“A. decision has now been reached regarding, the ultimate control of Wellington and Auckland stations .recently purchased,” the Hon. Al Hamilton g&id. “These will, be taken over by the Broadcasting Board at an early date and will be operated to provide alternative services 'to- those '.of the existing A stations.
3ZC, Christchurch, has been purchased by the Post and Telegraph Department as from 31st December, on which date it will be handed over to the Broadcasting Board, which will decide its future policy. Parliament h a d decided on the (retention of broadcasting ..as a national utility service.” the Minister continued. “It i s therefore intended it will be used for information, educational, and entertainment purposes. Every effort will be made to avoid using it a s an advertising medium or as a means of propaganda for the benefit of any section.”
