ART UNION FUND

'STUDENTS WANT SHARE,

WELLINGTON, October 10

A request for a share iu the proceeds of an art union to assist in providing u fund which would enable New Zealand art students to be sent abroad to further their studies was made to the Minister of Internal Affairs to-day by a deputation from the Association of New Zealand Art. Societies.

It was stated that it was desired to award, periodically. 'a travelling scholarship tenable in Europe and open to New Zealanders who were students of line arts and architecture. The cost was estimated at not less than, £350 per annum. Dr Carbery was spokesman.

In the course of his reply, the Minister said that some time ago art unions were returning a profit of £1,7,000, but the last few were something like £IO,OOO. Tile policy of. the committee in making allocations was directed with the object of relieving as much as possible distress in the community and . keeping in existence organisations and associations, which operated to the benefit of the community and which were suffering from the depress ion.

“We might be able to do something for you toward a scholarship for one year,” lies aid, “but the establishment of an endowment in the present, circumstances presents difficulties ..to me in •’making recommendations to mv colleagues.” The Minister ~promised that the recommendations made to him would be placed before the c°mmittqe responsible dor the. allocations.
