WORK FOR BOYS

SUCCESS IN WELLINGTON,

WELLINGTON, October 10. In comparison with other centres, the Wellington Boys’ Employment Committee lias placed the greatest number of unemployed boys in positions during the present year, and Iras the smallest number remaining 011 its rolls without work, according to figures announced at a meeting of the committee to-day. The report was described by the chairman, Mr It. H. Ninimo, as “the best sign yet” of tho upward trend in conditions. Mr L. J. Greenberg, in his report, outlined the position of boy unemployment, as shown by the rolls &f committees in the main centres, as follows: “Up to the end of, September th© number of boys registered and still unplaced in Wellngton was 314, in Auckland 334, in Christchurch 350. and in Dunedin 413. The number of boys put into position during the 12 months ended in August was - . Wellington lSoo, Auckland 1018, Christchurch 1500, including 580, in temporary positions, and Dunedin 585.” Mr Greenberg said the position locally was that there were more positions on farms offering than there were boys ready to take them. Of 314. who registered in Wellington, only about five wer© qualified to go on farms. “It has been said that there is any number up to 2000 boys, sons of relief workers, who have not applied to us for fear of their fathers being penalised owing to the boys obtaining employment,” said Mr Greenberg. “Mr P. H. Kinsman, who is in charge of the Unemployment Bureau, denies the truth of that statement very definitely. No relief worker is penalised because of the fact that his son is helped by us.”
