FREE PLACES
ACCREDITING TO BE PERMITTED
WELLINGTON, May 20.
Candidates for senior free places in secondary schools will not nil be required to .sit the intermediate Examination, and tln> Public Service Entrance Examination will not be hold this year, according to an announcement made bv the Minister of , Education (the. Hon. R. Masters, M.L.C.).
l’ho Education Departement in an announcement to teachers, says that the compulsory examination for senior free places last year served its purpose of providing means for a general survey of the standards of education obtaining in the various centres, and was not without value to .many cf the schools. It is not considered necessary, however, to repeat the survey this year. The former method of awarding free places—accrediting the better candidates in each school on the recommendation of tlie principal and requiring the remainder to sit. the lie termediato Examinaton—will be reverted to, but the department. states: “It is possible that a lower proportion cf candidates will be accepted ,by accrediting than has been customary in the past.” In the same advice to teachers the department announces that the .Public 'Service Entrance Examination will not be held this veal’.
