INVERCARGILL, May 16,
Twenty-six men, comprising tne majority of those in the Kapuka Camp for unemployed went on strike this morning a& a protest against the dismissal by the Public Works Department of the chairman and secretary of the camp committee, for, R is alleged, writing a letter to ts e prcr complaining that the conditions at this camp were becoming “absolutely unbearable ”
The strikers’ requested that the two imen should be reinstated and upon the Department refusing, they came in a body to Invercargill and interviewed the Mayor. They did not return to the camp. The Mayor stated later that he was to meet the strikers to-morrow morni>ng; when ihe hoped to have something definite for them. In the meantime he 'would see what the Department had to gay in reply.
TRENCHES AT JOHNSONVILLE.
[Refusal of relief rates.
WELLINGTON, May 16,
A( meeting of delegatee of the relief workers on various jobs met here tonight and discuased the placing of men 'at'‘digging the trenches to bury the pigs suffering from swine fever an Johnsonville.
The Wellington Union endorsed the attitude of the Johnsonville men m Refusing to do this work -at ijeflet rates. It was decided to accord full support.
