After 460 acres of bush and grass ihad been reduced to ashes in the Ptilii Valley, Kaikoura, yesterday, a sudden change ,of wind and rain saved the homestead 0 f J- Hackle from,destruction. riie family bad already •left the ;liouse, and removed the furniture.
In other parts the settlors felled breaks to keep the rfiames in . check and protect thair .farms.
