VICKERS (URGES .COMMUTATION
release may mean LIFTING OF
embargo
1 (this day at 12.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 19. The Metro Vickers company has (telegraphed the central -executive of (the Soviet urging commutation of the .sentences on Thornton and MacDonald. The latter’s petitions -may be answered ito-morrow, and refusal is deemed unlikely. Tiie Russian counsel is lodging a [Petition that Nordwall’s wife be per;mitted to accompany her husband to •England, though she is a Soviet citizen. If-the embargo is imposed, Australia and New Zealand are not likely to benefit greatly, because the Soviet exports to 'Britain continue to decline drastically. The “-Sun” understands that Thornton and MacDonald’s immediate release would cause Britain to reconsider, and probably remove the embargo before it operates.
