I n view of th e Koiterangi Plunket dance on Monday, the Saturday night assembly has been postponed. Completg arrangements for Monday’s dance have been made and th e supper will bo provided by the Women’s Institute.

The recent spell of bad weather has played havoc with the borough roads, and motorists are complaining of the state of several of the streets which are badly pot holed. No doubt the civic authorities will give tlie matter urgent attention.
Promises to hand from the various country districts and townspeople for the Paddy’s Market in the Soldiers’ Hall on Saturday include produce in large quantities, poultry, meat, home cooking, sweets, honey, apples etc., and should meet with a ready sale.

In Poker's Hall, Arahura, to-morrow evening, a dance will be held in aid cf the Plunket baby contest. Music will he supplied by Cook and Ackers, and popular prices of admission are being charged. Full arrangement ensuring the. .success of the evening have been made, and patrons are assured of a thoroughly.enjoyable time.
Donations of home cooking, sweets, vegetables, poultry, etc., will be very gratefully accepted by the R.S.A. committee for the Paddy’s Market in the Soldiers’ Hall on Saturday nexv April 22. Everything points to a pleasing performance by e the juveniles at the concert to be held in All Saints’ Hall this evening, in aid of the Plunket Building Fund. At the moderate price of adults. Is and children 6d admission there should be a capital attendance and patrons should go away pleased with their night’s entertainment. Home made sweets, which always prove very popular will be on sale and should meet the demands of all.
The Returning Officer for the Borough (Mr G. 'H. Coles) officially notifies in this insu-e the nominations received vester-day fo r the various municipal offices. For the Mayoralty, Mr G e orge Ferry, th, e -sitting Mayor, has -again had the honour of being returned unopposed. For the Council there are eleven nominations for nin e seats. At'of the old Council have offered themselves for re-election except M r D. J. Evans who retires after many years of splendid -service, -and there are ihrep new aspirants for office. For the Hospital Board ther n are five candidates for three seats, throe present member-* and two new candidate®—offering their services. For the Harbour Board the three sitting member® and' a new candidate wore nominated, but to r-~? •vi election, iMr D. P. Stuart -has retired, so that the members will be Messrs F. W. Keenan and X. Warren (re-elected), and J. A. Cnttanoe a new members. There will therefore be contests for the Borough Council and Hospital Bond, the polling day being Wednesday, May 3rd.

Both R, Coveiiy and A. Russell, who •were admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital 0 n Monday with head injuries and concussion, received in an accident, in a race at the Canterbury Jockey 'Club’s meeting at Riccafiton, are improving. Coyeny is now semiconscious and his condition is not serious.
Infectious and other notifiable diseases reported .in the Canterbury and West Coast Health Districts for the week ended noon on Monday showed a decrease of three as compared with th e previous week. The total was 12, as follows:—Canterbury : Scarlet fever, two; tuberculosis, four ; puerperal sepsis, one; bacillary dysentry, one. West Cost: There wore three deaths from tuberculosis reported in the Canterbury district.
A honey bear i s the mascot of the Norwegian motor tanker Osthav, which arrived at Auckland from Singapore on Saturday. Th e animal, which is about th e size of a fox tender, is a native 0 f the 'Straits 'Settlements and was purchased at Singapore. It is a pretty little animal with a thick coat of black fur and it has very sharp daws about two inches .in length, to enable it to
climb trees for honey. It i. s housed in a kennel inside -a large wooden 'cage and is feci on milk and apy thing containing sugar. Captain S. Hansen, the master 0 f the vessel, is accompanied by his wife and thiree-vear-old girl. T-h e child and bear are great friends ana play together inside the cage, The bear, however, is very destructive and for that reason it is not allowed at large,
