CHEERFUL TONE.
THE LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE
HOPE FOR FUTURE BRIGHT
LONDON, April 15. Cheerfulness reigned on the Stock Exchange when business closed for; the Easter holidays, conditions haying steadily improved throughout ’the week. Gilt-edged securities particularly were firm, 3-J- per cent war loin bonds reaching tha new record of £lO2 2s 6d.
| Several factors contributed to the improvement, notably the growing belief that Mr (MacDonald’s and Mr Roosevelt’s conversations will have good results, and possibly the deferment of payment of the next instalment of the war debt. Other “bull” points ar e the' progress made with our negotiations regarding trade agreements with other nations, more optimistic views concerning the forthcoming Budget, especially the possibility of ,a reduction i,n the beer duty, and last, but not least, the cheapness of money > which is regarded as likely to continue, and a reduction in the New York bank rate. All these factors gave reasonable hope for a continuance 0 f the buoyancy when business resumes on Tuesday.
