A decrease of one in the number of eases of infectious and other notifiable diseases was reported in tire Canterbury and West Coast Health, Districts tor the week which ended at noon yesterday as compared with the previous week. The total was 10, as lollows: Canterbury: Scarlet fever, six; tuberculosis, three; puerperal sepsis, one, bacillary dysentery, two. West Coast: Scarlet fever, one; diphtheria,. two. In the Canterbury district two deaths from tuberculosis were reported.

As tlie result of n fire which occurred early on Sunday morning, at Granity, the picture theatre was completely destroyed, with its contents, including two talkie machines and apparatus, some of the instruments and effects of the Granity Silver Band. The hall was owned by the Watson Estate, and wag leased to the Band. The damage is estimated at. approximately £3300 The Band’s toss is estimated at £ISOO. and this is corded by insurance to the extent of only £4OO. The building was insured, and is to be replaced by another structure, at an early date. Volunteer firefighters, with one lead of Imse from the Westport Coal Company’s main, wc'-e instrumental in 'saving the Granity Hotel, Wilson’s shop, and -McDonald’s store from destruction. The north side of the hotel was charred, and the flames secured a hold in the rafters, but were prevented from spreading. Wilson’s shop was considerably damaged at the rear. The dropping of the wind, and commencement of rain, helped the fire-fighters. Th e talkie film, “The Broken Lullaby,” was lost- in tlie fire.

During the week end the local plane piloted by Mr A. Nancekivell accompanied by Mrs Nancekivell made a trip to Nelson via Ikamatua and Buller Gorge. The weather was perfect and the time taken was hours. After Spending several days at Nelson doing several flights, the return journey was made leaving Nelson on Monday via Karamea and Westport. A landing had to be made at "Westport to pick up petrol supplies on account of severe head winds throughout the journey. The flying time taken to return wai? 4-} hours. Another trip will he made to umstchurch to-morrow.
