BOROUGH AFFAIRS

HOKITIKA COUNCIL MEETING.

LAST NIGHTIS BUSINESS.

The Hokitika .Borough Couucil met last evening when there were present, 6’rs. G. HeilW, 8./'W. Heenan, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, A. 0. Armstrong. The mayoral chair was occupied by Cr. J. ' King. Apologies fcr absence wele received from the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) and Crs. D. P. Stuart, D. J. Evans ahd B. Teichelmanii. 4 tmVard, correspondence was dealt with as follows: —

- The Vacuum. Oil Co., ’Wellington, intimated that it had arranged to have the kerbside petrol pump in. Stafford Street, opposite the botanical gardens, removed without delay, as the pump was not. in use.—Received. The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, forwarded copies of notifications forwarded to .local butchers, under section 19 of the regulations of the sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1908. Received.

The Public Trustee, intimated that, under the Local Authorities Interest Reduction and Loans Conversion Act. loan No. 6 is subject to the statutory reduction of interest from April (1, 1933, and that the necessary adjustment would be made and Council wou'd he advised later of such adjustment.— Received. .

The Secretary to the Treasury, forwarded a memorandum detailing the provisions of the Local Authorities In* terest Reduction and Loans Conversion Act, 1932-32 is affecting local authorities.—Received. ! -Several public bodies wrote asking for information and effect of 5 per cent discount allowed by this Council on rates paid within the statutory period.—lnformation to be supplied. Police' Department, Hokitika, intimated that the Police Department did not approve of suggestion to allow locaj billiard saloon to remain open until 1] p.ni.-^-Received. One Councillor said that it did not seem reasonable: ■" The chairman f thought that they should uphold tlie police, and abide by his opinion.'’ • VCr. Mr F. J: Singer wrote asking for permission to . erect . a small cottage on public park ■ adjoining the East Town ■Beit.—Council has no power to author ise. ■': v ; •

The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch intimated that Inspector Bettel had been transferred to Christchurch, tliat he was being succeeded by Inspector T. E. Schou, arid asking Council to pass the necessary rosolution appointing Mr ; Schou as sanitary inspector for the Hokitika Borough. On. the motion of Cub: Armstrong arid JCliiff, it was decided that Air T. E. Schou be appointed, under the Public Health Act, 1930, sanitary inspector for the Borough in place of Inspector M. E. Bettel, transferred.

It was further decided to write commending Inspector Bettel for the manner in which lie had carried out his duties.

The Returned Soldiers’ Association, Hokitika, made application for permission : to hold a sacred concert in the Princess Theatre on Anzac night, the 25th April; and for authority to charge for admission.—Granted. The Hokitika. Harbour Board forwarded copy of a. resolution passed by that Board on March 28, varying the resolution passed by the Board on July. 28, 1932, in respect of the 10 per cent penalty imposed on rates for the year ending September 30, 1932, so that no penalty shall be imposed on such; rates paid on or before 31st day of May, 1933.

The financial statement showed that receipts amounted to £1930 3s Bd, expenditure £BSB 16s Id. The district fund account showed a debit of £4#7 3s Id. Accounts amounting to £3OB 12s Id were passed for payment. The Council decided to impose a ten per cent, penalty on all rates and sanitary fees for the year ended March 31, 1933, which are not paid by May 31, 1933,

It was decided that the flashing ov the Town Hall be attended to. The next meeting of the Council was fixed for Wednesday, April 12.
