CHINESE VICTORY
DESPERATE STAND JAPANESE SUFFER SETBACK. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SHANGHAI, March 10. Reports state China is making desperate efforts to recapture Chengtehfu in Jehol. There was serious fighting there throughout the night of Wednesday. The Chinese claim that they drove back the Japanese for a considerable distance, losing two hundred men in the process. The attacks are being made by night, in order to nullify Japanese aeroplanes.

The complete expulsion of the Chinese from Jehol is hourly expected. 'The Legation at Peking will then negotiate to induce the withdrawal of the Chinese troops at/ present massed south of the Great Wall. The problem, however, will be with whom to negotiate. International complications are feared,
ARRESTED FOR TAKING SNAP'S
JAPANESE CASUALTIES HEAVY

The embassy secretary, Mr Crowe, and liis American wife have been arrested for photographing fortified zones. Newspapers state that 140 foreigners iare now listed ais suspects. Previous communiques, describing Japan’s incredibly small losses on the war fronts have been disproved by the arrival of many wounded. The Japanese casualties are now reported as heavy, owing to the difficulties of operations, and blizzards.
