Police -raiders wero amazed in Sydney, on a recent afternoon when, after raiding a Castlereagh Street club, frequented by Greeks, they saw four men dive'head first through a window, scramble on to a landing, then jump 35ft to a roof below to escape. “They risked their lives to avoid arrest on an ordinary gambling charge,” a , detective said later. <
A* posse of police visited the club and found the watcher sound asleep, leaning against the lift door. He was there to ring the bell should a stranger approach, the police claim, so that any dice being used above could be cleared away. Two detectives pounced on him and then dashed up the stairs, two sergeants at their heels. Pandemonium broke loose when the ranters broke into the clubfoom, Greeks and a few Australians ran'in qll directions and eight dashed toward the windows. There were not enough windows, however, and only four got away. Twenty-eight men were arrested and charged with having been found in a common gaming bouse.
