RELIEF WORKER
COMPLAINT MADE TO AUTHORITY WELLINGTON, March 9. The case of a relief worker in the Hutt borough, whose digging was so slow that the weeds grew as fast as the work proceeded, was before tbe last meeting of tlie Lower Hutt BorOUgll Council. Reports were made to the council on the work of lour men who had been transferred from the septic tank paddock job last September, because of their alleged, interference with other men on other works. The fourth case was stated not to be ,ao bad as thc other three. Details of the, work done by the four men were supplied, ■ showing that in case of each of two men set to dig plots of 43 yards by 13 yards the weeds had covered a considerable area of the dug ground before the job was half done. A third man had a similar experience on a smaller plot, while the fourth man did better than the others. Some councillors thought that, in view of the men’s performance, the council should refuse them relief work, whereas others said that it was difficult to get the best out of the men under such circumstances. It was decided to give them a final chance, and put the four men on clearing weeds from the sides of streets.
