PENURY IN COURTS
COMMENT BY JUDGE. Striking comment on the prevalence of perjury in the courts was made by Judge ; Foster in a Melbourne , Court lately. He was at the time sentencing Hetty Lawson, who said her correct name, \ya& Yienessfr Kelly, aged; 21 years, who diad pleaded guilty to having committed per jury, when,'in giving evidence".in .the Police Court at South Melbourne, she said, she was a married woman, v " ■ • • * Asked by His Honour why she made the false statement, Kelly saidoshe did so so that she would not he sent to gaol. ; v, v ; Hi s ,Hpnopi’ said that perjury of the class this ,woman had committed was committed every, day ip that -. Court, anti no r doubt - was committed every day in other Courts. .10 the.'Crow.n were to ,take action in, respect of all the false statements made by-accused people in their own defence, this and like Courts would he doing nothing else, hut shearing perjury cases. This woman had committed perjury to prevent herself-tfronv going to gaol. ,It was not a wanton act rn which she: had injured others. It wa> a lie that was easily found out. She would bo. imprisoned until the rising of the Qolirt.
