The number of unemployed registered during the week ended 24th December, 1932, was 69,281, a reduction of 30 compared with the week ended 26th November;.,l932. The figures for the week ended 24th December are:— Men on register 24th December. 1932, or transferred therefrom to schemes other than Scheme, No 5., 69,281. Of these- 69,281 men, 5199 were ineligible for relief for various reasons. This leaves 64,082 men a charge on the Board’s funds. These are engaged as follows:—Scheme No 5, 47,425; subsidised " employment on farms under Schemes Nos. 4A and 4B and the farm camp scheme; 9209; camp scheme (mostly single men), land l improvement, and development, 1689 ; highways arid backhlock’ roads ’ 1651; -afforestation (mostly State Forest Service) 469 j building ocheme subsidy 3243 j gold prospecting scheme (exclusive of 1274 men prospecting under Scheme No 5) 232; miscellaneous (subsidised employ, ment'in various industries) 164. Of the 64,082 men it is estimated that at least 32,000 men were engaged on work of a definite reproductive development nature' in connection with the Dominion’s primary industries.
