The Guardian And Evening Star, with which is incorporated the West Coast Times FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 1933. IRISH POLITICS.

Politics in Ireland have taken a deciwatt tuni during the last lew clays following the decision of Mr de Valera to dissolve the Bail and hold a general election in d.ico weens’ tune. The action taken has caused much surprise in political circles in the Free State, mu is considered to have been caused by .the -recognition by the leader of the Irish party of his fail me- to- hold Ins followers and the likelihood of defeat if lie continued the present arrangements, 1 ins position is the outcome of the attitude of the Government in connection with attempts made- to repudiate the Anglo-Irish treaty and the refusal to coJect the Irish land annuities for payment to British bondholders, resulting in an immediate economic refusal by Great Britain, the imposition of tar. ID against the- Fi ee State imports 1 proving ruinous to the Irish farmers, who have found that prices have- come down and there is a laliure to find other markets for the output of their farms. This result has caused widespread dissatisfact.on, and in many oases is causing ruin. The- Government’s further decision to persist' with further cuts in the salaries of civil servants has also added to the- crisis, the Labour party who had previously supported Mr de Valera, taking objection to this course of action and transferring their support to- the opposition. Such being the position, an attempt to retrieve his falling fortunes is now to be made by an appeal to the country for support of bis proposed programme.
