The weather which was perfect on Saturday, then changed and a light rain fell and continued at intervals through the night, and yesterday morning. It then cleared for the afternoon, but at nightfall further showers fell.

The stranded whale at the north of Waimea Creek, * a good, mile north of Awatuna attracted several hundred people on Saturday and Sunday, motor cars, motor cycles and bicycles being al’| utilised in large numbers for the occasion, people coming from all parts of the district. The mammal at high tide yesterday was being washed about by the sea and was difficult to approach, but those who visited the scene when the tide was not at the full were able to get right up to it. As the result of cutting a tendon in his right leg ,while working for the Public Works Deartment at Kopara, Honald Brunnercomb, 24, married, was admitted to the Greymouth Hospital on Friday. It is reported that he is now progressing favourably. -

The recent heavy rain, was responsible fo r a. good deal of flood damage throughout the district. Docherty's creek, beyond Waiho, the Upper Waitah.a. river, and the Hokitika river at Kditerangi, have -been responsible for serious inroads eroding roads and threatening damage to property. On Saturday Mr Murdoch (County Chairman) accompanied by Mes«r s Jeffries and Keenan, Ms.C.O•, while in -Sou h Westlaud looked into various. county matters. When inspecting the damage at Docherty’s creek. Mr Johnston, District Engineer, was present and action was decided upon to .restore traffic in order that resident children in the neighbourhood could attend school. The party also went through to Weheka before returning. An irgpection was mnd 0 also of Evan’s .road 'drainage, where good work has been done. The question of’ continuing the work to include the drainage on the upper side will be considered by the Finance Committee on th e . 13th inst., when also reports on threatened damage at Waitaha and Koiterangi will be considered. Two small works involving a total expenditure o! £l3 were authorised in the south.

There was a very large and fully representative gathering at the Waiho Gorge on Saturday evening for the presentation to Mr M. , Carroll who has iust retired from the Public Works service after acting as Road Overseer in the Far South tor many years. Mr Johnston District Engineer, presided, and presented the guest with a gold watch and chain and to Mrs Carroll a painting of their residence by Miss E. Richardson with Franz Josef Glacier in the background-. Messrs Murdoch (County Chairman), Jeffries M.C.C, M. Sullivan, J. Schilling land others spoke, eulogising the faithful service rendered by Mr Carroll. It w*as estimated that Mr Ckrroll had travelled on hors a. back 12-5, COO miles in the discharge of his duties, which Mr Murdoch remarked was just half way to the moon! Occasion Was taken also to present Mr Jas. Green, a retiring roadman of long service, with a rug. A short programme of entertainment was given ratlinly by local residents, with the assistance of Miss Theodm of Dunedin and' Mr W. E. Brown of Hokitika. A social dance followed, music being ‘supplied, by the Happiness Boys of Hokitika. The whole function was a great success and a high tribute to the personal worth of Mr and Mrs Carroll.
