HUGE TELESCOPE

SECOND LARGEST IN WORLD. LONDON, October 15. The second largest telescope' in the world is being constructed at the works of Sir Howard Grubb, Parsons and Co., a subsidiary company of Messrs C. A. Parsons and Co., Ltd., at. Newcastle 0 n Tyne. it is intended for the Toronto University Observatory, and highly skilled craftsmen have been engaged on it since November, 1930. Another two years or more will elapse before telescope iff finished, making nearly five years in all since the order was placed to the handing over of’ the instrument.

The largest telescope in the world is at Mount Wilson Observatory, California- and was built in the United States.

The instrument now being built at Newcastle is the largest constructed in this country.

Mr Cyril Young, manager cf the works, said that the telescope will have an aperture of 74 inches as copmared with the 100 inches of the instrument in California.

The telescope is to he erected in a special steel dome and will weigh approximate 50 tons. It will he mounted on a. massive concrete pier. The main mirror will he 76 inches in diameter and about 12 inches thick, and will weigh about 2\ tons,
