N.Z. AGRICULTURE
TRIBUTE PAID BY ENGLISHMAN
“SHOWS THE WAY TO THE WORLD.”
WELLINGTON,. November 16
One of Britain’s leading business men, who is also an authority on the manufacture of explosives, and a specialist in the sphere of chemical research as applied to agriculture, is at present in Wellington. He is Lieut.Golonel G. J. Pollitt, a director of Imperial Chemical Industries, of Great Britain.
On iiis , arrival yesterday Lieut.Colonel Pollitt was met by representatives of the Department of Agriculture, and by Mr E. Marsden, of the Department of Scientfic and Industrial Research.
“Naturally I was exceedingly interested in the agricultural development of this country,” he told an intervievver. “We look upon New Zealand as shewing the way to agriculture, and for that reason we take every opportunity of sending our men here to be trained. Our officers seize upon any excuse to come her!” A SERVICE TO AGRICULTURE. New Zealand, he said, Lad done a real service to the agricultural communities pf the world by the certifying of seed. Though the Dominion may not have started the practice, it certainly had developed it, and the success of the system was recognised everywhere, New Zealand receiving full credit.
Business in Great Britain, Lieut.Colonel Pollitt added, was “bucking up”—there were definite signs of improvement. The readjustment of Empire duties was a great step forward, ‘and although these had little o r no effect on Imperial chemical industries directly, they assisted those industries for which the combined companies catered.
The agricultural side of the Imperial chemical industries organisation was one of considerable importance, and was growing every year. The market for explosives, as a result of the growth of the mining industries throughout the Empire, was also extending.
