The weather . .was. dull and threatening for the V.R.C. races to-day. There was an enormous attendance for Cup Day, including many New Zealanders.
The Dawn Patrol was scratched for the Melbourne Cup at 11.45 a.m. Peter Pan had a remarkable victory in the 'Melbourne Cup. Interference to the horse 1 ;- cost 1 seyeraLj'Jengths five £arlongs was last early i^|^|i i by a brilliant run, Peter Pan then came fast on the rails, and won in the last few strides. Shadow King was a good third. Manawhenua (New 'Zealand)' did well to get up to fourth place. The other New Zealanders failed to show up. Peter Pan’s trainer has had a remarkable ■ record _ this spring. He has won the A.J.C. Derby, the Metropolitan Handicap, and the Cantala Stakes. Duncan accepted the mount on Peter Pan after Saturday’s win. The detailed -results were ns follows
Cup Hurdles.—Lynden (Tucker) 1, Walter Scott 2, Phocis 3. Ther e were fourteen starters. Won by five length s ; third two lengths away. Time 3.38}. This is a race record.
/Railway Highweight Handicap.— Largesse 1, Call Bird 2, Hunt The Slipper 3. There were twenty starters. Won by two and a half lengths; third half a length away. Time 1.13 J. Mimosa .'Stakes. —Heroid Lass 1, Hilly 2, Lady Syghton 3. There were nineteen starters. Won by two lengths; a length. Time 55’-sees. Melbourne Cup.—Peter Pan (Duncan) 1, Yarramba (Knox) 2, Shadow King (Baxter) 3. There were twenty-seven starters.
Induna and Admiral Drake made the early pace, from Eastern Chief, Liberal. Shadow King, Manawhenua and Rogilla-, with 'Peter Pan running eleventh, and Yarramba last. Seven furlongs from home,. Induna and Rogil]a were leading from . Eastern 'Chief, Liberal, Manawhenua, Silent Bird and (Havering, with Yarramba still lg s 'tNear the- five furlongs post, ' Peter Pan was interfered with, and he lost ground, as also did Shadow King. Rogilla led at the turn-, but it was a well-bunched field that entered the straight, where Yarramba came fast on the outside, and had charge at the distance, but Peter Pan finished brilliantly, nnd won by a neck. Shadow King was- two lengths away, and then came Manawhenua, Induna, Oratory, Game Carrington, Middle Watch, 'Silent Bird, and Lough Neagh, with Admiral'Drake last. The time was 3.23}. The Stewards inquired as to the reason for Peter Pan dosing ground at the five furlongs post, ■ They found that it was caused by another horse beating Peter Pan lor an opening on the rails. Peter Pan narrowly escaped a fall. The occurrence was accidental. Steeplechase.—The Cracksman .1, Amention 2, Gratify 3. There were sixteen starters. Won by four lengths ; on© and a quarter /lengths. Time 4.1£.
Yan Yean Stakes.—Casque D’Or 1, Doctor’s Orders 2, Actaeon 3. Eleven started. Won by two and a naif lengths; * two lengths. Time 1.39 j.
SECTIONAL TIMES
TRAINER PRAISES DUNCAN. .
MELBOURNE, November 1
The sectional times in the Melbourne Cap were :—First four . furlongs, 52 secs; next four, 51| secs ; succeeding four, 49J .secs ; last four 50i secs ; concluding six, 1 min 15 goes; last mile, 1 min secs. . In the Yan Yean 'Stakes the last four furlongs were run in 50j secs. Frank McGrath, the trainer of Peter Pan, stated 1 that Peter - Pan’s victory w.as due to the jockey Duncan’s fine horsemanship. Duncan stated he had a beautfiul ride till the five furlongs post, where another horse shifted and hit Peter Pan. It was only a fluke that the colt stood up. The colt was going away at the post. Compris ran 13th, Peter Jackson 15th, aid Havering 16th in the Cup. Admiral Drake injured his foreleg. Limarch, Blixt'en, Easy Money, and Metro are acceptors for Thursday’s tßyrpn Moore Stakes. Havering, Star God, Lady Pam, and King C'o-ossus are acceptors for the Veteran Stakes.
